I was talking to a friend today about weight loss and how much she thought she should weigh. She had an arbitrary number that she thought she couldn’t go below. She just viewed herself as stocky and just didn’t believe she could ever be considered small or a ‘skinny’ girl despite having lost almost 19 pounds. She is in fact closing in on a perfect venus index!

Bale looks like death in the machinist and jacked in batman
Having an irrational belief that you are just bigger or thicker than the average might hold you back from achieving your weight loss goals. This belief might stop you from achieving your ideal adonis index (guys) or venus index (girls).
In other words, your somatotype and your current size have nothing to do with your ability to build a perfectly proportioned body…BUT your BELIEF of your body type can certainly sabotage your willingness to try.
Despite the fact that we all have some identifiable somatotype characteristics, the difference between them isn’t as much as you might think. Even a true endomorph (big and thick) can still lose substantial bodyfat and look much closer to a meso or a meso/ecto. Likewise an ecto can build great proportions and look more mesomorphic without having to gain massive amounts of muscle.
How you choose to eat and workout will determine how you can make your body look (regardless of your somatotype).
Have a look at the pictures above of Christian Bale. I’d say he’s a mesomorph and look how freakin’ skinny he got for his role in the machinist. If you only ever saw him in that one movie you’d say he is an ecto all the way. If you only saw him in batman you’d say he’s a meso. So what is he?
The answer is it doesn’t matter.
Shoot for a good proportioned body (ideal Adonis Index or Venus Index) and don’t stop till you get there.

Hi, great blog and podcasts..
Just one off topic question, I’m natural bodybuilder (I’m from Finland) and plan to do contest next summer. I’m 5’9 and and was 160 lbs with 6% fat at my last contest. Soo, I still like the sport but I’m so fed up with these 6 meals per day bodybuilding diets. I’ve been following your advice “calories in->calories out” principle and it’s so freein’, still training bodybuilding extra hard but eating what I like.
And the results are just as great as with these traditional bodybuilding diets.
Now I’m training for my contest and start the cut tomorrow, what’s your opinion, is it possible to reach that below 6% fat with just eatin’ what I want but counting calories ( I plan to keep calories 1200 per day mon-fri and weekends little higher).
My friends are so sceptical (guess I’m too..:)) that one could reach that contest ready condition with that approach, and I really want to prove them wrong!
Ok, thanks

Doro,
The Venus Index is our measurements for the ideal proportions for women. We’re working on it right now and I’ve got a few women on a workout to help them achieve their perfect venus index ratios. If you’re interested in more info you can email me at john@adoniseffect.com

Hey John,
Given your previous two articles, I’m curious if you would assume that Christian Bale used steroids to achieve the look in Batman.

I echo Darren’s question. Bale’s transformation was even more radical than the professional athletes you cited.

Lou and Darren,
You’ve got to remember that hollywood is trying to be a dreamland. Both of these picutres are from movies that are trying to make Bale looking even smaller in the top picture and and look even bigger in the bottom picture.
In my opinion i think Bale could easily achieve the look he has in the batman picture above without steroids. I’ve seen other guys get to about that look without using anything so I don’t see why he would need to use something. Just to be clear, I don’t know Bale personally and I have nothing besides these pictures and the movie to base my opinion on.

I always knew the meso, ecto, endo thing was BS… It’s really nothing more than a psychological standpoint I think. Its just how you view food and your self-image.
When a person is a so-called ecto, its really a person who has the habit of being super-concious of their eating, they literally suck every atom of every bite they chew. You know a person is an ecto even if you never meet them in real life and you just chat with them online… How? When they say they’re off to have dinner, they’re off for like 30 minutes… Most so called endos gorge food… When they say they’re off for dinner, they’re back before you can ask what they’re having.

dear john,
your posts are always a good read.
though I find it slighty sarcastic that you claim christian bales body-wise changes are due to pure will power. just a couple posts ago you explained that getting massive like that was unnatural and an unrealistic goal without using durgs. Am I wrong?
cheers

Hi John/Tommy
This is an interesting point.
I am beginning a muscle building program after just finishing using eat-stop-eat to drop 9 lbs of body fat within 12 weeks.
Just like with eating to loose weight is it ok to assume that as long im taking in slightly more calories than my body uses, eating ‘sufficient’ amounts of protein and weight training to promote muscle growth then I will put on lean mass no matter what I eat?
Its so frustrating to read ‘manuals’ etc that state that you have to eat ‘clean’ to avoid putting on too much fat when you are trying to build muscle when the answer lies in the additional quantity of food people eat.
Best regards
M

Rock guitar pointers for the would be guitarist…
One of the most worrying things amongst guitarists is fear.It is not the physical fear. The Jazz guitar genre happens to be one of the most fearful amongst many guitarists….
