Let’s Make a Deal – Never Gain Fat Starting Today?

I was having a conversation with a friend of mine and she brought up the most interesting thought experiment for weight loss.

No weight gain for no weight loss?

No weight gain for no weight loss?

Imagine you were granted the power right now to never gain another pound of fat for the rest of your life no matter what or how much you ate? Would you take it? <– I think the answer for most of us is a resounding YES…but then she threw a little twist into it…and it goes like this…

BUT, this same power also makes it impossible for you to ever lose another pound of fat for the rest of your life.

In other words, would give up your ability to ever lose fat again for the power to never gain fat again from this day forward no matter how much food you eat?

Do we have a deal?

Please answer in the comment section.

easy. drop myself to the body fat percentage i’m comfortable with, then sign away :)

  2. Björn Says:

No not at the moment if i’m cut down yes ;)
6 kg fat away and i would sign right now

Interesting thought experiment. I think I’d take that deal. IDEALLY, I want to lose about 4 more pounds of fat. But I’d keep them in exchange for never having to restrict my diet again. Besides, I could still gain muscle, the way I read it. And get more fit…. I’d just have to keep those vanity pounds.

That brings me to the question, why not settle for where I’m at now? I basically don’t gain or lose any fat as it is (has been so for more than a year), it’s as if I’m already living the scenario! I’m just unsatisfied with myself because there’s a little more body fat than I’d like.

And, I do restrict/control my eating. That would be the trade-off that would make the deal worth it.

I would take the deal, absolutely..
I’m down to about 8% body fat and I would love to stay at this level for life..

  5. Wazzup Says:

    Nope.

Status quo is not my goal in life. It’s the road traveled that matters more then the destination, but still, goals are necessary, otherwise one just wanders mindlessly (without destination there is no direction).

70-85 pounds overweight. Definitely would not do it right now. Goes without saying, lol. I’ve had a lifetime of eating whatever I want, I’m looking forward to eating less! It’ll feel really good to be disciplined, in control of myself, and… thin!

  7. Girlwithnoname (Jackie) Says:

no. I’m lean but I’ve been a smidge leaner. I’d want to take the deal in about a month … if I knew the deal was still available then I could get there in time, no prob. It would take some serious cal restriction but then it always does, right? short term pain for long term (lack of) gain!!

    LOL

  8. MikeGP Says:

Oh Man, LOL, ive thought about this exact thing several times. Right now im not in my best shape, im about 6 pounds over my ¨six pack¨ look. But i still look good. I would definetely take the deal, im 29 at the moment, if i look like this at 40 without effort, it would be sweet….and eat everything i want…I guess we better start trying to get a hold of the devil.

  9. Rahim Says:

I agree with Jay. If I’m at the body percentage I want to be, sure I’d sign.

  10. Grok Says:

No, I’ve just about been in this position before.

I know what foods I’d go back to eating. My body comp would be nice, but I’d be completely un-functional and feel so shitty because of the lack of visual consequences for my food choices.

Let me clarify part of this thought experiment. The idea is if you would take the deal right now, today, immediately.

There is no choice to wait for a few months and ‘lose the last 5 pounds’ <– because we all know this never happens and if it does there is no guarantee you’ll be happy after you drop those 5 pounds.

    I’d say no.

I’m at my ideal weight right now, and close to my Adonis Ratio (1.547). But I would never sign a deal like this. After ESE and workouts 2-3 times per week I never really worry about fat or muscle anymore. Usually 1 fast and 2 workouts per week keeps me at 11% bodyfat. That’s fine….. when I want to drop it to 10% bodyfat I add another fast and another workout and simply just eat a little less pizza the days I’m eating:-) A deal like the one mentioned would me to lose a control over myself that I actually find rather easy to execute.

  13. Gareth Says:

I’d say yes. I’m in pretty good shape at the moment and if you gave me the freedom to eat and drink as much as I like without any weight gain I’d do it. I try not to worry about what or how much I eat and although I’m pretty laid back in my approach, following mainly ESE, it would be nice if that didn’t even have to cross my mind.

  14. Mike Says:

Not sure how to take this one.

On one hand it would be terrible for those with no self-control. Consistent fat levels and poor health would follow with a diet high in saturated fats and sugars. After all no “consequences” for bad diet right? Or is there a worse consequence than a few extra pounds of fat?

On the other hand the ability to direct food into good muscle building material (with no additional fat gain) would be awesome. You would have to be fairly disciplined to only consume good quality food.

Hmmm, difficult choice to make. I think I’d say no as I am not that disciplined :)

  15. Amy Says:

    Thank you, John,
Nice way to make people think why they always “plan” to change the way they look/eat, while they never do. Some of the comments reveal the power of hope, I guess.

  16. Wazzup Says:

Nope. No deal. NOT gaining fat and “eat whatever you like without consequences” is a pact with the devil which can only go wrong. Besides, it would probably mean I couldn’t gain any muscle either, and not get any stronger (or adjust my AI for that matter). Besides this whole healthy eating and exercising would be pointless without any obtainable goals or structured path towards them.

So no, I will keep my ability to gain fat.

  17. Ali Says:

A couple years ago I would have said yes for sure. Although I probably didn’t look much different, food was like the Dark Side to my Force. I was eating skinless chicken breasts and iceberg lettuce all the time. Never again! I love food, cooking and eating so much. Now that I’ve found a regimen that lets me eat anything I want, I don’t battle with food anymore. I just enjoy it. The deal to me is not really about how heavy you are, though it’s obvious that if you’re really unsatisfied with how you look you’re not going to take it. I think ultimately the point is to get down to your goal weight and not need the deal, and learn how to live without having to see food as something you’re battling and making compromises over. Food is way too good to view it as a “bad influence”.

  18. supersaiyaan Says:

I am not so sure.i love eating low cal.though often i stuff myself up(eat eat until im full),i enjoy while doing this(indulging high cal) but afterwards i feel like shit, feels i hv no energy and so tired.i feel full of energy when i go low cal.
As i have said, im not sure if ill make the deal or not.but either way ill b eating low cal most of the time, thus wont gain fat ANYWAY.
