Weight loss is simply a matter of a caloric deficit. The easiest way to achieve a deficit is through caloric restriction (eating less food)
There is good research to show that even when people add exercise to a low calorie diet they do not lose any more weight. This shows that weight loss is almost entirely dependent upon diet.

After many years of going up and down, it wasn’t until the past 2 months that this has really hit home. No matter how much excercise I did I would not lose all the weight I wanted. Sure I lost some, but it was never enough.
Now that I am very focused on calories in, it has been much better. I am in no way starving myself, only keeping very close tabs on the number of calories I am eating. And it is working.

I’m new to reading your blog, good stuff, enjoy most of what your say and agree with most of it as well. And i know this is an old post, but I get a little peturbed, when people talk about a diet only fat loss, not because it isn’t true, but mainly because of the the body makeup,lack of strength and mobility, and for the quite obese, excess skin it can bring if its done by diet only, thought that may happen with the proper exercise as well. Having written a book called the the Adonis Effect, I would think that exercise (again an assumption, so apologies if i’m off base, but from what i gathered, its a series of ratios) would be equally as important to reach such a goal. Basically my beef isn’t with your statement, its more with the inference that people gather when they read it, because I completely agree with the science behind it, I just think for a well functioning human being, exercise is just as important to ones overall aesthetics, and more importantly, mobility and strength, both very important factors, especially later in life.
